I had never eaten a turnip prior to this evening. I think that must lower me to like a level 6 vegan, but I admit it. In fact I was talking about our gardens to one of my employees a week or 2 ago, and she (being the sweet woman that she is) brought me 3 giant turnips and two huge acorn squash from her garden! I was enamored with the lavendar and white skin. And when I peeled it, there was a sharp, horseradish like smell that drew me further in. I read that it is supposed to be delicious boiled and then mashed with potatoes and carrots, milk, garlic and butter, so I used some unsweetened soymilk, and e.b. instead and gave it a whirl. The gorgeously colored mash looked lovely on it's own, like a snow covered volcano with a crater full of buttery lava, but I was leery of the taste and smell not matching up (and fairly certain that no one else would like them with out some outside help), I made what anyone who made a crap ton of garbanzo beans earlier in the day would make.... Punk rock chickpea gravy from Vegan With A Vengence. So we had chicky seitan from Isa Does It ( the boy is hooked on it and I can't say I blame him, or have run out of ways to prepare it yet), the mash, marbled banana bread, and some fresh sliced tomatoes from the garden. I loved everything but the mash sadly. Looking for different ways to try the turnips to see if I like them. It took a dozen different recipes to find away I like beets. Found a chickpea and turnip curry that looks promising. Anyone have any turnip recipes to share? After dinner we headed to the park with the boy and the pug in tow. The boy and I enjoyed a nice round of hide and seek tag. It was a nice day off :) looking forward to trying something else new tomorrow, and checking out all the other blogs. Happy MoFo everyone!

Day2
Day 2 went as follows, lunch consisted of a chili tortilla with earth balance and pepperoni (per his request of course, he is hooked on it!) sammie, carrots with the soy ginger dressing again, a peach mango fruit gel cup, chocolate almond milk and a you rock note in his batman lunchbox, which matches his batman backpack from Hot Topic which is super cute because it has a batman hood that unzips from the top of the backpack. Sadly the strap is kinda farkakta because it was made out of a cheap nylon taffeta, and instead of sewing the foam and the fabric into the seam, they just sewed the fabric, so guess who's going to be playing seamstress in the near future? None the less he loves it, but for a $35 backpack, with a free poster (which cost us $5 in gas because the store we went to was out of them and we had to go clear across town to another store to pick it up) it should have held up a little longer. I guess we were paying for the hood? lol Todays outfit consisted of a black eye courtesy of Apple's army hat (Apple is my beloved grandson, a penguin from build-a-bear who wears swim trunks and an army hat) that he fell face first on last night getting out of the car , a army green solar system t-shirt, the belt, gray velcro strap tennis shoes, and black and gray DKNY shorts. I gotta say it was kind of cute the way he clutched Apple close to his chest so that he wouldn't get hurt, and build-a-bear should not use hard plastic brims in the hats for their lovies.

Day 2 of lil man's new grown up life
Missed the pictures today, but the photo was from when he tried on his clothes. He wore the cute punky mohawk smiley shirt with black, light blue and white madras plaid shorts. Lunch was Late July crackers, Tofurky cubed to use on them, an apple, baby carrots (all organic of course) with tahini tamari dip, Archer farms organic pomegranate fruit strip, and a roll of smarties, and a chocolate Silk soymilk. Over all success? He drank all of the milk (who shuns chocolate milk?), a few carrots, and a few crackers. I think I sent way too many crackers. I filled up one of the little bento containers from his LapBox Lunch box. I think his biggest problem right now is not that he doesn't like the food, but that he is 1) a slow eater, and 2) a social eater. He needs to work on less talk, more chew, but I figure after a week of being still hungry, he'll catch on ;)
